AWB operates two main programs: Employment Support and Day Support. Roughly half of the individuals we serve participate in each programming bucket. Employment Support primarily provides various group workforce opportunities for those looking to work. AWB contracts with outside organizations to provide lawn maintenance, shredding, janitorial services, and more. Through these partnerships, AWB is able to ensure an accommodating work environment where individuals gain hands-on work experience. The benefits of Employment Support programming are numerous - participants gain critical work experience and pay in a supportive environment, and businesses diversify their workforce and gain reliable employees. AWB also supports single work placements. Each individual works with our Career Counselor to secure employment at an outside company - which handles scheduling and payment directly with their new employee. AWB provides a staff member who directly supports each individual during their work shifts without doing their job. Day Support is for individuals who rely on AWB for enriching services - from hands-on care to recreational activities. These experiences serve to garner useful skills, stimulate minds, and build community. Individuals come to AWB to enjoy music classes and performances, arts and crafts, games, yoga, group meals, and more. Our facilities feature sensory rooms, a music room, a recording studio, a game room, computer rooms, and more. In addition, with the help of AWB staff, individuals also have the opportunity to travel to local parks, museums, community events, and more - practicing social interaction, money exchange, and dining skills.
Example of Program Success | Let me tell you about Roger. He is adamant about working each day and is successful at many jobs. Roger is currently employed with Delmar Products, where he sorts and assembles guitar picks for printing. Along with his work crew, Roger can complete thousands of picks per week. In addition, Roger is one of the most polite people you will ever meet. He greets everyone with ahandshake and is generous and kind in every way. Roger is a success story at Abilities without Boundaries. He has a developmental disability, but has been given a chance. He is an adult who has the capability to be a productive member of society, but who might have been kept out of the workforce due to the boundaries our society set out before him.Let me stress, might! Roger is fortunate because he is a participant at Abilities without Boundaries, where he is provided with an on site job coach to ensure that he is successful and that the needs of his employer are met. |

As part of the learning process at Abilities Without Boundaries, clients participate in Community Experience programming. Individuals in this program visit a wide range of settings to stimulate their social skills and learn. With the help of a trained staff person, the clients from Abilities Without Boundaries travel to local parks, shopping malls, grocery stores, and more. These unique sites help teach social interaction, money exchange, and dining skills outside the Abilities Without Boundaries facility.

Since 1978, AWB has helped adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in central Connecticut achieve independence, self-sufficiency, community participation, and personal satisfaction through employment and day support services. What began with a few concerned parents has blossomed into an organization with roughly 60 employees, all sharing a deep and profound respect for the nearly 100 individuals we serve.
AWB operates programming for a broad spectrum of individuals with disabilities - in terms of need, age, speaking ability, socioeconomic background, and more. Our staff provide high-quality support and care, serving each person with dignity and respect. Abilities Without Boundaries is committed to empowering those with disabilities to uncover and pursue their dreams.
