The mission of Guilford Interfaith Volunteers (GIV) is to promote the well being of the home bound, elderly, or those of any age who have special needs, by providing them with food - with the Guilford Meals on Wheels program, friendship - with the Friendly Visiting program, and medical equipment - with the Charlie's Closet program. Our motto is 'Neighbor helping Neighbor'. The organization's role is to fulfill a need in the community with volunteers who want to help their neighbors.
GIV's most pressing needs include: ** Raising the funds not covered by client payments needed to run our programs: $81,000 for Meals on Wheels. We ask our clients to pay what they can afford (using a sliding scale). Last year, we provided 53% of the meals at a reduced price to our clients. ** Raising $28,000 to cover the cost of running the Friendly Visiting/Food Bank programs. Both programs are free of charge to the clients, but the service they provide is invaluable. ** Raising $65,000 to run Charlie's Closet. There continues to be an increase in the volume of requests for used durable medical equipment. Charlie’s Closet strives to meet this need and address these requests regardless of the client’s residency. Charlie’s Closet assists anyone requesting help.
The highlights of Guilford Interfaith Volunteers' (GIV's) service to the community in fiscal year 22-23 include: * Guilford Meals on Wheels delivered 38,864 meals to 286 clients, an 11 % increase over last year. Our 99 volunteers drove over 22,000 miles delivering meals to Guilford Residents. * Friendly Visiting provided over 2,300 hours of social connections to 334 isolated or lonely Guilford residents with 30 trained, caring volunteers. * Charlie's Closet provided 6,649 pieces of used medical equipment to clients in Guilford and 101 Connecticut communities. If purchased new, the equipment provided would have cost over $880,000. 3,293 people received medical equipment, and we received over 1600 donations of equipment. GIV's goals for the upcoming year include: * Increasing fundraising to help cover the growing expense of providing nutritious meals to residents in financially fragile households.
We are proud of the services that our small organization provides to the community through the fantastic people who volunteer in our four programs. It is incredibly rewarding to know that we are making a positive difference in the lives of thousands of Connecticut residents, many of whom are going through some of the hardest moments in their lives. We are also proud that we are a grassroots organization, open to new challenges, and we have grown as new needs in the community have been identified. Our mission is to care for any individual in our community, despite their financial situation or age and help to make them feel that they matter. We do that by making connections with them, providing food and/or medical equipment, if needed.

Guilford Meals on Wheels, Friendly Visiting and the Food Bank are solely for Guilford residents. Charlie's Closet provides medical equipment to and accepts donations from any Connecticut resident. This past year residents from 101 Connecticut towns received equipment. There are people who drive over one hour to pick up equipment.
| The Guilford Meals on Wheels program provides a hot, nutritious meal to the home of ANY Guilford residents temporarily or permanently if they are unable to shop or cook. Meals are delivered Monday through Friday between 10:30 and 12:30. Weekend meals are delivered on Friday. These meals arrive via 99 dedicated volunteers. The cost per meal is based on a sliding scale: $5.00 per meal or less. The program has no age or financial restrictions. No state or federal funds are used. This is a community-supported program based on our motto, "Neighbor Helping Neighbor". | |
| Example of Program Success | We regularly receive letters from grateful clients whose health has improved thanks to the nutritious meals. A diabetic lady who was able to get her glucose under control by eating our meals, another lady who, in just a few weeks, gained the weight she had lost after her stroke. The daily visit and/or friendly weekly visit provide a much needed human connection, improving the emotional well-being of our clients. Very often, the drivers are the only people that the clients will see all day. When the drivers have a concern about the client's well being, they notify the office personnel, who will follow-up by contacting the emergency contacts on file, or the police (who will do a wellness check if the client has not come to the door). Once, one of our clients ended up in the hospital after we reached out to the family. One client called the office to thank us after we had the police check on her, in her words: 'it is nice to know that somebody cares.' Very often, we get calls from clients who may not need anything other than a friendly ear and a chance to chat when they don't have anyone else to call. We recently started a pet food distribution to our Meals on Wheels recipients who would benefit. We continue our annual tradition of sending complimentary holiday meals on Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter with wonderful bags of goodies donated from the community, We also continue our tradition of serving Veterans a complimentary Veteran's Day lasagna dinner to thank them for their service. We celebrate birthdays, sent flowers and special meals and desserts to our Meals on Wheels families throughout the year. We continue to add new products that may be needed. Our gluten free menu option and our Blizzard boxes are two examples. |
|---|---|
| Friendly Visiting is an outreach program designed to provide services to a population in need of a social visit. The Friendly Visiting program meticulously matches volunteer visitors with people requesting a friendly visit. Our goal is to improve the client's qualify of life through a weekly "friend to friend" connection. Trained and concerned volunteers visit any homebound or lonely Guilford resident once a week for a year or longer. There is no fee and scheduling of visits is flexible. | |
| Example of Program Success | Friendly Visits can be well-defined, centered on a certain activity, or can be as relaxed as having a cup of tea or taking a walk. Many of our matches become lifetime friendships, benefiting both the recipient and the volunteer. Through the years we have had clients who enjoy going for a car ride. This car ride helps stimulate the client's memory as to how Guilford was when they were growing up. Not only is this information interesting to the volunteer, it also makes the client feel good about themselves! We also continue to help facilitate a Zoom learning session in cooperation with the Guilford Free Library to help seniors navigate technology and connect with family and friends. |
|---|---|
| Charlie's Closet is a used durable medical equipment clearinghouse. Our mission is to take donations of this equipment, clean it, check it for safety and then make it available to anyone requesting it. The clientele we deal with are those who suddenly find themselves caring for a loved one, or who might lack insurance or the financial means to afford such equipment. Our primary focus is on the Guilford community because much of our annual funding comes from our local faith groups, the town of Guilford, and the Guilford Community Fund. However we also provide our services and equipment and accept donations from clients throughout all of Connecticut and even outside the Connecticut borders. | |
| Example of Program Success | We provide the necessary equipment to people who have been denied coverage or that cannot afford the price. The people that use our services are usually living some of the hardest moments in their lives, being seriously ill or disabled or taking care of a loved one. It is an honor to be able to help them and lift their burden a little bit. We have provided motorized wheelchairs to disabled individuals, improving their quality of life. |

The motto of Guilford Interfaith Volunteers is "Neighbor Helping Neighbor." Our mission is to promote the well-being of the homebound, sick, elderly, and disabled by providing them with home-delivered food - with the Guilford Meals on Wheels program, social connections - with the Friendly Visiting program; and medical equipment - with the Charlie's Closet program. The Meals on Wheels and Friendly Visiting programs help around 250 Guilford residents every year. Charlie's Closet is open to anyone who would like to donate or pick-up medical equipment. Last year, over 4,000 people from all over Connecticut used Charlie's Closet. The material provided (over 6,100 pieces last year), if purchased new, would have cost over $500,000, and without Charlie's Closet, most of it would probably have ended in the landfill. The demand for meals has increased by 47% during the pandemic, as we have added close to 100 new clients this year alone. We will help any Guilford resident that needs our assistance, without a waiting list. Our goal during the pandemic has been to keep our seniors safe at home. We do not receive any State or Federal funds.
We make a difference by what we GIV.
