Our Story

New Haven Ballet has set the standard for classical dance training throughout Greater New Haven for nearly forty years. The School offers dance classes and performing opportunities to students ages 3 to adult and provides incredible outreach programs to disabled and traditionally underserved populations. The School's students are accepted annually to prestigious summer intensive programs, including the School of American Ballet, Boston Ballet, Chautauqua Institute, The Rock School, Pennsylvania Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, and Miami City Ballet. Students have also been offered professional trainee positions and enjoyed wonderful careers in dance. In addition to expanding New Haven Ballet’s summer offerings to include a premiere sleep-away summer intensive and implementing a highly regarded and effective conditioning and stretching program for pre-professional and developing dancers, New Haven Ballet presents many works in the classical repertoire, including excerpts from Sleeping Beauty, La Sylphide, Raymonda, La Bayadere, Giselle, Le Corsaire, Swan Lake, and Paquita.

New Haven Ballet’s most prominent annual production is a full-length Nutcracker, which students from New Haven Ballet School perform at the Shubert Theatre and stars dancers from New York City Ballet. The Ballet regularly partners with area arts organizations, including Yale’s Graduate School of Music, Neighborhood Music School, and Music Haven. New Haven Ballet also partners with the Dixwell Community House (“Q House”) and the Joseph Trapasso Community Center in Branford. New Haven Ballet recently presented the full-length children’s ballet Beauty and the Beast, which premiered at the historic Shubert Theatre in 2018 and performed in 2024, Peter Rabbit in 2019, and a children’s version of Don Quixote in 2022, and Coppélia in 2023. New Haven Ballet also presents community performances and performs at festivals, including the Q House, Bethany Town Hall, Guilford Community Center, Branford Festival, Bethany Town Hall, Paul Mellon Arts Center, and the International Festival of Arts and Ideas.
